Places to Visit in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is a one-sight city with a lot around that one sight. Mehrangarh stands on a 120-metre cliff straight above the old town, and it is arguably the most imposing fort in India – not the largest, but the one that most looks like what a fort is supposed to look like. Below it the blue houses of the old city run out towards the clock tower.

Two days covers Jodhpur well: one for the fort and the old city, one for the Bishnoi villages and the countryside. Below is what to see and how long each thing needs.

What to See, and How Long It Takes

Place What it is Time
Mehrangarh Fort The fort above the city, with palaces, courtyards and one of the best museums in Rajasthan 3 hrs
Jaswant Thada White marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, beside the fort 45 min
The blue city The indigo-washed lanes below the fort, around Navchokiya and Brahmpuri 2 hrs
Clock tower and Sardar Market Spices, textiles, silver; the commercial heart of the old town 1.5 hrs
Umaid Bhawan Palace One of the largest private residences in the world; part museum, part hotel 1 hr
Mandore Gardens Cenotaphs of the Rathore rulers in a garden 9 km north; rarely busy 1 hr
Toorji ka Jhalra An 18th-century stepwell, restored, in the middle of the old town 30 min
Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park 72 hectares of restored desert habitat below the fort walls 1.5 hrs
Bishnoi villages Blackbuck on open ground and the Salawas weavers, 20–25 km out Half day
Osian 8th to 12th century Jain and Hindu temples, 65 km on the Jaisalmer road 2 hrs

Two Days in Jodhpur

Day 1. Mehrangarh in the morning, early, before the heat and the coaches. Jaswant Thada next door afterwards. Lunch. Then walk down into the blue city, through to Toorji ka Jhalra and the clock tower, finishing with the market as it gets going in the late afternoon.

Day 2. The Bishnoi village safari in the morning, when the wildlife moves – blackbuck in open country, the Salawas weavers, and the community whose 1730 stand at Khejarli is why the animals are unafraid. Umaid Bhawan or Mandore in the afternoon.

If you only have one day, do Mehrangarh and the blue city and accept that you are leaving the rest.

Mehrangarh Fort

The 5 km long majestic fort on a 125 metre high hill is one of the most impressive and formidable structures. Although invincible from the outside, the fort has four gates approached by a winding road. Within the fort are some magnificent palaces with marvelously carved panels, latticed windows and evocative names. Not worthy of these are the Moti Mahal, the Phool Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal, the Sileh Khana and the Daulat Khana. These palaces house a fabulous collection of trappings of Indian royalty including a superb collection of palanquins, elephant hawdahs, miniature paintings of various schools, musical instruments, costumes and furniture.

Jaswant Thada

Cluster of royal cenotaphs in white marble built in 1899 A.D. in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Within the main cenotaph are the portraits of various Jodhpur rulers.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

The only 20th century palace built under the famine relief project that gave employment to famine struck population. The palace was completed in 16 years. This opulent edifice in sandstone is still the residence of the former rulers with a part of it running as hotel and remaining part as a museum.

Tour End

“We do hope the flavor of India will remain on your taste buds for all times to come and hopefully would kindle an indelible fondness for the country and her people; Thank you for being our guest, and as we say in India ‘Please Come back Soon”

Practical Notes

  • Mehrangarh needs more time than people allow. Three hours, not ninety minutes. The museum collection – palanquins, howdahs, miniature paintings, arms – is genuinely good, and the audio guide is one of the better ones in India.
  • The blue city is a walk, not a drive. The lanes are too narrow for a car. Our driver drops you at the top and collects you at the clock tower, which is the sensible arrangement.
  • Go up for sunset. The view from the fort ramparts or from a rooftop in the old town at dusk is the thing people remember about Jodhpur.
  • Umaid Bhawan is partly a hotel, so only the museum section and grounds are open to visitors. Worth knowing before you build an afternoon around it.
  • October to March for the weather. Jodhpur sits on the desert edge and is severe from April to June.

Frequently Asked Questions: Places to Visit in Jodhpur

How long you need, Mehrangarh timing, and the blue city on foot.

What is Jodhpur famous for?
Mehrangarh Fort above all – on a 120-metre cliff directly above the old town – and the blue houses of the old city below it. Also Umaid Bhawan Palace, the Bishnoi villages with their blackbuck, and the markets around the clock tower.
How many days do you need in Jodhpur?
Two. One for Mehrangarh, Jaswant Thada and the blue city; one for the Bishnoi villages and either Umaid Bhawan or Mandore. One day covers the fort and the old town and nothing else.
How long should I spend at Mehrangarh Fort?
Three hours, which is more than most itineraries allow. The museum collection is one of the best in Rajasthan and the audio guide is worth taking.
Why is Jodhpur called the blue city?
The houses in the old town below the fort are washed in indigo blue. The usual explanations are that it marked Brahmin households, that the pigment repelled insects, or simply that it kept interiors cooler – probably some combination, and nobody is certain.
Can I visit Umaid Bhawan Palace?
Partly. It is still a royal residence and a hotel, so visitors can see the museum section and the grounds rather than the whole building. Allow an hour and do not plan a full afternoon around it.
Is the Bishnoi village safari worth doing?
Yes, and it is the best half day in Jodhpur after the fort. Blackbuck graze on open ground within metres of people because the Bishnoi have protected wildlife for five centuries, and the Salawas weaving villages are part of the same trip.
Can I drive into the blue city?
No, the lanes are too narrow. The arrangement that works is being dropped at the top near the fort and walking down, with the car collecting you at the clock tower.
What is the best time to visit Jodhpur?
October to March. Jodhpur is on the desert edge and the heat from April to June is severe. Winter nights are cold, so pack a layer if you are visiting in December or January.
How far is Jodhpur from Udaipur and Jaisalmer?
Udaipur is 250 km, about five hours, via Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh – both worth stopping at. Jaisalmer is 285 km, about five hours, with Osian on the way.
