Kumbhalgarh is about 90 km from Udaipur, in a valley of the Aravali mountain range. It is a World Heritage hill fort of Rajasthan, standing majestically about 1180 metres above sea level. From the top you get a panoramic view of the Aravali Mountains and the countryside. The fort is protected by 13 mountain peaks and is a lasting reminder of the past glory of the Rajput rulers. On the climb you pass through seven large gates that stand like sentinels at the approaches. The thick fort wall, about 15 feet wide, winds along the mountain ridges for 36 kilometers.

The grand white marble Ranakpur Jain temple stands on a platform of roughly 60 x 62 metres and is supported by 1444 pillars, no two carved exactly alike. Construction began under Dharanashah with the patronage of Maharana Kumbha, then ruler of Mewar. An inscription on a pillar near the main shrine records that in 1439 the architect Deepaka built the temple at the direction of Dharanka, a devoted Jain. The temple has been restored from time to time and remains one of the finest Jain temples in India.
