India Golden Triangle Tour

India Golden Triangle Tour with Udaipur and Rajasthan

The classic Delhi–Agra–Jaipur circuit takes five days. This page is about what happens when you have eight to twelve, which is when the India Golden Triangle tour stops being a sprint and becomes a proper trip through north India.

The reason to extend is simple geography: Jaipur is the gateway to Rajasthan, not the end of it. Udaipur is 400 km further south, Ranthambore sits conveniently on the way, and Jodhpur and Jaisalmer open up the desert. All of it is drivable, and we run it with one vehicle and one driver from your first pickup to your final airport drop.

Golden Triangle Tour with Udaipur: 8 Days

The most popular extended version, and the one we would suggest if you have a week and a half.

Day Route Overnight
1 Arrive Delhi. Old and New Delhi sightseeing. Delhi
2 Delhi to Agra, 240 km. Agra Fort and sunset at Mehtab Bagh. Agra
3 Taj Mahal at sunrise. Drive to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri and Abhaneri, 240 km. Jaipur
4 Jaipur: Amber Fort, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, bazaars. Jaipur
5 Jaipur to Udaipur, 395 km, via Chittorgarh Fort. Udaipur
6 Udaipur: City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Lake Pichola boat ride, Saheliyon ki Bari. Udaipur
7 Day trip to Kumbhalgarh Fort and Ranakpur Jain Temple. Udaipur
8 Fly out from Udaipur, or drive on. –

Golden Triangle with Ranthambore: 10 Days

Add a tiger to the itinerary. Ranthambore sits between Jaipur and Udaipur, so it costs you a detour rather than a backtrack.

Days 1–4 as above. Day 5: Jaipur to Ranthambore, 180 km, afternoon safari. Day 6: morning safari, then drive to Chittorgarh or straight to Udaipur. Days 7–9: Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur. Day 10: departure.

Two safaris is the right number – sightings are not guaranteed on any single drive, and the park is closed from 1 July to 30 September. Zones are allocated by the forest department, not by us, and permits need booking well in advance for the winter months.

The Full North India Circuit: 12 to 15 Days

Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Ranthambore, Udaipur, Ranakpur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Mandawa and back to Delhi. This is the version our repeat guests take, and the one where travelling by car genuinely beats any alternative – the Jodhpur–Jaisalmer–Bikaner stretch has little else serving it.

Distances on the Extended Circuit

Leg Distance Drive time
Delhi to Agra 240 km 4 hrs
Agra to Jaipur 240 km 4–5 hrs
Jaipur to Ranthambore 180 km 3 hrs 30 min
Jaipur to Udaipur 395 km 7–8 hrs via Chittorgarh
Ranthambore to Udaipur 400 km 7 hrs
Udaipur to Jodhpur 250 km 5 hrs via Ranakpur
Jodhpur to Jaisalmer 285 km 5 hrs
Jaisalmer to Bikaner 330 km 6 hrs
Bikaner to Mandawa 190 km 3 hrs 30 min
Mandawa to Delhi 260 km 5 hrs

The Jaipur–Udaipur leg is the longest single day on the circuit. Breaking it at Chittorgarh – the largest fort in India, and genuinely worth two hours – turns a hard drive into a reasonable one.

How We Run It

  • One vehicle, one driver, the whole route. Your luggage stays in the car and you are not re-explaining the plan each morning.
  • Licensed guides city by city. A local guide in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Udaipur beats one person pretending to know all four.
  • Realistic drive times. The figures above are ours, from running these roads since 2009, not an optimistic estimate.
  • Hotels optional. We quote with or without; many guests book their own stays and take the vehicle and guides from us.

Shorter on time? The five and six day versions are on our Golden Triangle tour package page. Travelling in style? See the luxury Golden Triangle tour. For the Rajasthan leg alone, see Rajasthan taxi service.

Frequently Asked Questions: Golden Triangle with Rajasthan

Adding Udaipur and Ranthambore, drive times and how long you need.

Can you add Udaipur to the Golden Triangle tour?
Yes, and it is the most requested extension. Udaipur sits 395 km south of Jaipur, so it adds two to three days: one for the drive via Chittorgarh, one for the city itself, and often a third for the Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur day trip. The eight-day itinerary on this page is built around exactly that.
How many days do you need for the Golden Triangle with Rajasthan?
Eight days covers the Golden Triangle plus Udaipur. Ten adds Ranthambore for a tiger safari. Twelve to fifteen takes in Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and the Shekhawati havelis as well, which is the full north India circuit.
Is Ranthambore worth adding to the itinerary?
If you want a realistic chance of seeing a tiger, yes – and it is conveniently placed between Jaipur and Udaipur, so it costs a detour rather than a backtrack. Book two safaris, because sightings are not guaranteed on any single drive. The park closes from 1 July to 30 September, and winter permits need booking well ahead.
How long is the drive from Jaipur to Udaipur?
395 km, seven to eight hours. It is the longest single day on the extended circuit, which is why we break it at Chittorgarh Fort – the largest fort in India, about two hours from Udaipur, and worth the stop in its own right.
Do we keep the same car and driver for the whole trip?
Yes. The same vehicle and driver stay with you from the first pickup to the final drop, which on a twelve-day route across four states matters more than it sounds.
Is it better to fly or drive between the cities?
Drive for everything on this circuit. The legs are four to eight hours, and the things worth seeing between the cities – Fatehpur Sikri, Abhaneri, Chittorgarh, Ranakpur, Kumbhalgarh – have no useful rail or air connection. Flying is only sensible if you are adding somewhere far off the route, such as Varanasi or Kerala.
Can we end the tour in Udaipur instead of returning to Delhi?
Yes, and it often works out cheaper and less tiring. Udaipur has a well-connected airport at Dabok with flights to Delhi and Mumbai, so a one-way route ending there avoids a 660 km drive back. We handle the airport drop as part of the tour.
What is the best time of year for this itinerary?
October to March throughout. Note that December and January can bring morning fog in Delhi and Agra, and that the desert cities get genuinely cold at night. April to June is very hot for the Agra and desert legs, and July to September closes Ranthambore.
Do you include hotels, or just the car and guides?
Either. We can quote the vehicle and licensed guides alone, or a complete tour including hotels in your preferred category – standard, heritage haveli or palace. Tell us which you want and your budget range.
