The Golden Triangle is the Delhi–Agra–Jaipur circuit, so called because the three cities form a rough triangle with roughly 240 km on each side. It is the standard first trip to India for good reason: in under a week you see the Mughal capital, the Taj Mahal and a Rajput city, and the driving between them is short enough that no day is lost to the road.

The Agra–Jaipur leg is the one worth planning properly. Fatehpur Sikri sits on the road, not off it, so you can see Akbar’s abandoned capital without adding a day. Abhaneri’s Chand Baori stepwell is a 20-minute detour for something most visitors never see.

Golden Triangle Tour 5 Days Itinerary

The most-booked version. Tight but not rushed, and it covers everything people come for.

Day 1 – Delhi. Arrive and sightsee. Old Delhi: Red Fort, Jama Masjid and a rickshaw through Chandni Chowk. New Delhi: India Gate, Humayun’s Tomb and Qutub Minar. Overnight Delhi.

Day 2 – Delhi to Agra. Leave after breakfast, reach Agra by early afternoon. Agra Fort, then Mehtab Bagh across the river for sunset on the Taj. Overnight Agra.

Day 3 – Agra to Jaipur. Taj Mahal at sunrise, which is the only time to see it properly. Breakfast, then drive to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri and Abhaneri. Overnight Jaipur.

Day 4 – Jaipur. Amber Fort in the morning, with the Jal Mahal photo stop on the way. Afternoon: City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, then the bazaars. Overnight Jaipur.

Day 5 – Jaipur to Delhi. Drive back, with lunch at Neemrana if the timing suits, and airport drop. Or finish in Jaipur if you are flying out from there.

Golden Triangle Tour 6 Days Itinerary

The same route with one extra night, which goes a long way. The usual choice is a second night in Agra – letting you see the Taj at both sunrise and sunset and visit Fatehpur Sikri unhurried – or a second day in Jaipur for Nahargarh, Jaigarh and the stepwell at Panna Meena ka Kund.

If this is your first trip to India, take the six-day version. The extra day absorbs a delayed flight, a slow morning or a change of mind, and the five-day plan has no slack in it.

What You See in Each City

Delhi. Red Fort and Jama Masjid for the Mughal city, Humayun’s Tomb for the building the Taj descends from, Qutub Minar for the medieval ruins, India Gate and Rajpath for the colonial plan. Akshardham and the Lotus Temple if you have the hours.

Agra. The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort where Shah Jahan was imprisoned looking at it, Itmad-ud-Daulah – the “Baby Taj” – and Fatehpur Sikri on the way out.

Jaipur. Amber Fort above the lake, City Palace, the Jantar Mantar observatory, Hawa Mahal’s lattice facade, and the best shopping on the circuit – block-printed textiles, blue pottery, gemstones.

How many days are required for a Golden Triangle tour?
Five days covers it – one day Delhi, one Agra, one Jaipur and two travel days with sightseeing built in. Six days is better if this is your first trip to India, because the extra night gives you the Taj at both sunrise and sunset or a second day in Jaipur, and it absorbs a delayed flight without wrecking the plan. Four days is possible but means seeing the Taj and little else in Agra.

Is the Taj Mahal closed on any day?
Yes, every Friday. It is the most common reason a Golden Triangle itinerary has to be reshuffled, so tell us your arrival date and we will build the route so your Agra day never lands on a Friday.
When is the best time for a Golden Triangle tour?
October to March. The weather suits long sightseeing days and the light is better for photographs. April to June is very hot, often above 40°C in Delhi and Agra, and July to September brings the monsoon. December and January can bring morning fog in Delhi and Agra, which occasionally delays flights and trains – another argument for the six-day version.
Should I start the Golden Triangle in Delhi or Jaipur?
Delhi is usual because most international flights land there, but Jaipur works just as well and is often cheaper to fly into from within India. The circuit is a loop, so the order barely matters – what matters is which city you can fly in and out of most easily.
Can the Golden Triangle be done by car rather than train?
Yes, and we would recommend it. The road legs are short, and the things worth seeing between the cities – Fatehpur Sikri, Abhaneri, Neemrana – have no useful railway station. A private car also means no fixed departure times and your luggage stays with you.
Can we add Udaipur or Ranthambore to the Golden Triangle?
Yes, and most of our guests do. Udaipur adds two to three days and is the most requested extension; Ranthambore adds one to two for a tiger safari and sits conveniently between Jaipur and Udaipur. Jodhpur and Jaisalmer add three to four for the blue city and the desert.
What vehicle should we book for the Golden Triangle?
For two people travelling light, a sedan is fine. For two with full suitcases, or a family of four, take an Ertiga or Innova – these are 240 km drives with luggage, not airport hops. Innova Crysta if comfort matters, and a Tempo Traveller or Urbania for nine or more.
Are monument entry fees included?
No. Entry and camera fees at the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Amber Fort, Qutub Minar and the rest are paid separately, and the Taj has an extra ticket for the main mausoleum. Our fare covers the vehicle, fuel, driver allowance, state tax, toll and parking.
