Eklingji Sightseeing Tour Package

Eklingji Sightseeing Tour Package from Udaipur

Eklingji is 22 km north of Udaipur at Kailashpuri, and it is arguably the most important temple in Mewar – more so, in a constitutional sense, than any palace. Eklingji is Shiva, and the rulers of Mewar did not claim to rule in their own right: the Maharana held the title of diwan, the regent, governing on behalf of Eklingji as the actual sovereign of Mewar. That is not a flourish; it shaped how the dynasty understood itself for a thousand years.

The temple is usually visited with Nagda, a few minutes away, where the 10th-century Sas-Bahu temples stand in ruins. Together they make a comfortable half day, and they sit on the road to Nathdwara and Haldighati if you want a full one.

Eklingji Temple

The original temple is attributed to Bappa Rawal in the 8th century, the founder of the Mewar line. What stands now is largely the 15th-century rebuilding by Rana Kumbha, after earlier structures were destroyed. The complex holds a large number of smaller shrines around the main temple – traditionally counted as 108 – inside a walled enclosure.

The main idol is a four-faced black marble form of Shiva, roughly 50 inches tall, facing the four directions. The temple’s double-storeyed hall and the silver doors of the inner shrine are worth noticing rather than walking past.

Practical: darshan runs in morning and evening slots with the shrine closed for several hours in the middle of the day, and the exact hours shift seasonally. Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside, and lockers are available. Monday is traditionally the significant day for Shiva and the temple is busier then, as it is during Shravan.

Nagda and the Sas-Bahu Temples

A couple of kilometres from Eklingji, Nagda was an early capital of Mewar and is now mostly gone. What remains is worth the stop: the Sas-Bahu temples – the name translates as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, a popular label rather than a historical one – built around the 10th and 11th centuries and covered in carving that has survived remarkably well on the larger of the two.

The Adbhutji Jain temple, 15th century, stands nearby. Nagda sits beside Bagela Lake and is a quiet place; you will often have the ruins to yourself, which cannot be said of much else within half an hour of Udaipur.

Making It a Full Day

Eklingji and Nagda take about two hours between them. The natural extension is north on the same road:

  1. Eklingji and Nagda – early, before the midday closure.
  2. Nathdwara – 26 km further, Shrinathji Temple, timed to a darshan slot.
  3. Haldighati – the 1576 battlefield and Maharana Pratap museum on the way back.

That is an eight-hour day covering the deity of Mewar, its most-visited Vaishnav shrine and the battlefield that defined its resistance. See our Nathdwara taxi and Haldighati taxi pages, or Udaipur sightseeing day tour for the city itself.

Frequently Asked Questions: Eklingji Tour

Distance, darshan timings, Nagda, and combining it with Nathdwara.

How far is Eklingji from Udaipur?
About 22 km north, roughly 40 minutes by road. Nagda is a couple of kilometres further on and is normally visited in the same trip.
Why is Eklingji important to Mewar?
Because the rulers of Mewar did not claim sovereignty for themselves. Eklingji – Shiva – was held to be the actual ruler of Mewar, and the Maharana governed as his diwan, or regent. That relationship shaped the dynasty’s self-understanding for a thousand years, which is why the temple matters more than its size suggests.
What are the Eklingji temple timings?
Darshan runs in morning and evening slots with the shrine closed for several hours in the middle of the day, and the hours shift seasonally. Check for your date, and tell us which slot you want so we can set the pickup rather than guessing.
Can I take photos inside Eklingji temple?
No. Mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside the temple, and lockers are available at the complex. You can photograph the exterior and the surrounding area.
What are the Sas-Bahu temples at Nagda?
Two 10th to 11th century temples at Nagda, an early Mewar capital. The name means mother-in-law and daughter-in-law and is a popular label rather than a historical one. The carving on the larger temple has survived unusually well, and the site is usually almost empty.
How long does the Eklingji tour take?
Four to five hours as a half day from Udaipur, covering Eklingji, Nagda and the Adbhutji Jain temple. Add Nathdwara and Haldighati and it becomes a full eight-hour day.
Can I combine Eklingji with Nathdwara?
Yes, and most guests do. Nathdwara is 26 km further north on the same road, so the two work naturally together – Eklingji early, Nathdwara timed to a darshan slot, and Haldighati on the way back if you want the full day.
Is there a dress code?
Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is expected, as at any working temple. Leather items are generally not permitted inside the shrine.
When is Eklingji busiest?
Mondays, which are traditionally the day for Shiva, and throughout the month of Shravan. Festival days fill the complex completely. A weekday morning outside those periods is the easiest visit.
How do I book an Eklingji tour?
WhatsApp +91 99838 89373 or email rajasthanonwheeltours@gmail.com with your date, pickup time and address, passenger count and whether you want to add Nathdwara and Haldighati. A 25% advance confirms the vehicle.
