This is the western route with the two things most itineraries skip: a proper stop at Kumbhalgarh rather than a drive-past, and a night or two at Jawai, the granite leopard country south of Jodhpur that almost no standard tour includes.

Ten days is what it takes to do this without a forced march. Udaipur, up into the hills at Kumbhalgarh, across to Jawai, on to Jodhpur, then the desert run to Jaisalmer – one vehicle and one driver throughout.

No single leg here is over five hours, which is the point of the ten-day version. The same ground compressed into seven days means two 300 km-plus days back to back.

Day 1: Arrival in Udaipur & Evening at Leisure

Jawai: Why It Is Worth the Detour

Jawai is a landscape of bare granite hills and a reservoir, south-east of Jodhpur, and it has a resident leopard population living alongside the local Rabari herding community rather than inside a fenced park. That coexistence – leopards in the hills above villages whose people do not hunt them – is what makes it unusual.

Safaris run from the camps in the area, morning and evening, in open vehicles. Sightings are good by the standards of wild leopard anywhere, though as always nothing is guaranteed. Birdlife around the reservoir is excellent in winter, including flamingo and cranes.

Practical note: Jawai accommodation is mostly small camps and lodges with limited rooms, so it books out further ahead than the cities do. If this part of the route matters to you, book early.

Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur

Kumbhalgarh Fort is a UNESCO site with 36 km of continuous wall – the second longest in the world – and the birthplace of Maharana Pratap. Allow three hours. The adjoining wildlife sanctuary runs jeep safaris for leopard, wolf and sloth bear.

Ranakpur Jain Temple, 50 km on, has 1,444 carved marble pillars and no two alike. Non-Jain visitors are generally admitted from around noon, so it works better as an afternoon stop than a morning one – worth planning the day around.

Why Jawai is worth the detour, Ranakpur timings and booking ahead.

Why include Jawai in a Rajasthan itinerary?
Because it is the one stop on this route that almost no standard tour includes. Jawai has wild leopards living in granite hills above Rabari herding villages, outside any fenced park, and sightings are good by the standards of wild leopard anywhere. It also breaks the Ranakpur–Jodhpur drive into two easy legs.
Is 10 days too long for this route?
No – it is what the route needs. Compressed into seven days you get two 300 km-plus driving days back to back and a drive-past at Kumbhalgarh instead of a visit. At ten days no leg exceeds five hours.
How far is Jawai from Jodhpur?
About 160 km, roughly three hours. From Ranakpur it is about 90 km and two hours, which is why it fits so naturally between Ranakpur and Jodhpur.
Are leopard sightings guaranteed at Jawai?
No, and nobody can guarantee a wild animal. That said, Jawai has a reputation for good sightings because the leopards live in a relatively small area of hills and are habituated to vehicles. Two safaris, morning and evening, improve the odds considerably.
When should I book Jawai accommodation?
Early. Jawai is mostly small camps and lodges with limited rooms, so it books out further ahead than any city on this route. If Jawai is the part you care about, that is the booking to secure first.
What time does Ranakpur temple open to visitors?
Non-Jain visitors are generally admitted from around noon, with the morning reserved for worship. It is worth building the day around that rather than arriving at ten and waiting – Kumbhalgarh in the morning and Ranakpur in the afternoon is the natural order.
How long do I need at Kumbhalgarh Fort?
Three hours. The wall runs 36 km – the second longest continuous wall in the world – and the fort itself involves a steady climb, so it is more walking than most Rajasthan forts.
Is a desert camp night at Jaisalmer worth it?
For one night, yes – the dunes at sunset, dinner and folk music under canvas. Two nights is usually one too many. Camp and camel safari charges are separate from the tour fare.
Can we add Bikaner to this route?
Yes. Bikaner is 330 km on from Jaisalmer and adds roughly two days, bringing in Junagarh Fort and the camel breeding farm. That makes it a 12 day route, and the drive from Bikaner back towards Delhi or Jaipur is straightforward.
