Quick answer: Delhi to Udaipur is about 660 km by road, a drive of 10 to 11 hours via Jaipur and Ajmer on NH-48. The fastest option is a direct flight of about 1 hour 15 minutes. Overnight trains take around 12 hours and save you a hotel night. For families who want to see Rajasthan on the way, the best option is a road trip with one or two nights’ stop in Jaipur or Pushkar.
Delhi and Udaipur are both on almost every Rajasthan itinerary, one at the start, the other near the end. The 660 km between them can be a wasted day, a comfortable night, or the best part of the holiday. It depends on how you do it.
Delhi to Udaipur: All Options Compared
| Mode | Distance | Travel time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | ~570 km (air) | ~1 hr 15 min flight + ~3 hrs airport time | Short trips, business travel |
| Train (overnight) | ~740 km (rail) | ~12 hrs | Budget, saving a hotel night |
| Car (direct) | ~660 km | 10 – 11 hrs | Families, flexible travel |
| Car (road trip) | ~660–750 km | 2 – 4 days | Seeing Rajasthan on the way |
| Bus (sleeper) | ~660 km | 13 – 15 hrs | Lowest cost |
Distances and times are approximate and depend on route, traffic and the exact start and end points.
Option 1: Flying from Delhi to Udaipur
This is the fastest way. Several airlines run direct flights from Delhi to Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap Airport (Dabok) throughout the day, and the flight takes around 1 hour 15 minutes.
Remember the airport time:
- Getting to Delhi’s IGI Airport and through security: 2–3 hours
- The flight: ~1 hour 15 minutes
- Udaipur airport to the old city: about 25 km, 35–45 minutes by taxi
Door to door, that’s about 4 to 5 hours, still far quicker than any other option.
Choose the flight if: you’re short on time, travelling solo or as a couple, or starting your Rajasthan trip in Udaipur.
Option 2: Train from Delhi to Udaipur
Direct trains connect Delhi and Udaipur City station. The popular choices are overnight trains such as the Mewar Express and the Chetak Express, which leave Delhi in the evening and reach Udaipur the next morning, around 12 hours later.
Why travellers like it:
- You save a night’s hotel cost.
- You wake up in Udaipur, ready for the day.
- AC sleeper classes (1A, 2A, 3A) are comfortable for most travellers.
What to know:
- Book early. Seats fill quickly in the October–March season, especially around Diwali, Christmas and New Year.
- Check which Delhi station your train uses: Hazrat Nizamuddin or Delhi Sarai Rohilla, for example. Leave time for Delhi traffic.
- Udaipur City station is about 3 km from the old city.
Option 3: Driving from Delhi to Udaipur
The main route via Jaipur and Ajmer
The most common road route runs south-west from Delhi on NH-48:
Delhi → Gurugram → Neemrana → Jaipur → Kishangarh → Beawar → Udaipur
It’s about 660 km and takes 10 to 11 hours of driving with breaks. The road is a wide national highway most of the way. Newer stretches of the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway can shorten parts of the early journey, depending on your exact route.
It’s a long day for one driver. We don’t recommend doing it in a single day with young children or elderly passengers.
Stops worth making
- Neemrana (~120 km from Delhi): A classic breakfast stop, home to the 15th-century Neemrana Fort Palace.
- Jaipur (~280 km): The obvious overnight stop. The Pink City deserves at least a day.
- Ajmer and Pushkar (~400 km): Ajmer Sharif Dargah and Pushkar’s sacred lake are a short detour. See our Pushkar travel guide.
- Kishangarh (~380 km): India’s marble capital, with its striking white “marble dumping yard”.
- Nathdwara (~610 km, 50 km before Udaipur): The Shrinathji temple, and the giant Statue of Belief visible from the highway.
Alternative route via Chittorgarh
If you’re coming from Jaipur, you can also reach Udaipur via Bhilwara and Chittorgarh, adding about an hour of driving but letting you see one of Rajasthan’s greatest forts on the way.
Option 4: The Road Trip (Our Recommendation)
For most families visiting Rajasthan for the first time, the best way to go from Delhi to Udaipur isn’t in one go. It’s over several days:
| Day | Route | Drive time | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Delhi → Jaipur | 4.5 – 5 hrs | Jaipur |
| 2 | Jaipur sightseeing | — | Jaipur |
| 3 | Jaipur → Pushkar (via Ajmer) | ~3 hrs | Pushkar |
| 4 | Pushkar → Udaipur (via Nathdwara) | ~5 – 5.5 hrs | Udaipur |
You’ll see three very different places, and no day has more than about 5.5 hours of driving.
Option 5: Bus from Delhi to Udaipur
AC sleeper buses, both private and RSRTC, run overnight between Delhi and Udaipur. They’re the cheapest option, taking around 13 to 15 hours.
They’re fine for solo travellers and backpackers on a budget. For families, a train is usually more comfortable for a similar overnight journey.
Cost Comparison: What You’re Really Paying
Ticket prices change constantly, so rather than quote numbers that go out of date, here’s how the options compare in practice:
- Bus is the cheapest per person, but you’ll arrive tired.
- Train (AC sleeper) is inexpensive, and saves a night’s hotel, which makes it the best value for solo travellers and couples.
- Flight fares vary widely. Book early in the season and they can be close to train prices; book late in December and they can be several times higher.
- Private car is the most expensive for one or two people, but for a family of four or five, the cost per person often comes close to flights, and you get door-to-door travel, stops and luggage space.
Always check what a car quote includes. Tolls, state taxes, parking, the driver’s night allowance and the charge for the car’s empty return journey can add a surprising amount.
Travelling with Children or Older Parents
- Break the drive. A night in Jaipur turns a gruelling 11-hour day into two comfortable ones.
- Choose an SUV. Captain seats and more legroom make a real difference over 600+ km.
- Take a daytime train only if the timings suit you; overnight AC sleepers are usually easier with kids.
- If flying, book the morning flight. You’ll reach Udaipur by lunch and have the afternoon to settle in.
The Return Journey: Udaipur to Delhi
Everything above works in reverse. The most popular combination is to road-trip from Delhi to Udaipur, then fly back. Evening flights from Udaipur let you spend the last morning in the city, and you’re home the same night. If you’re driving back, consider a night in Pushkar or Jaipur, or take the route via Chittorgarh for something new.
Which Option Should You Choose?
Short on time (2–3 days in Udaipur)? Fly.
On a budget, or want to save a hotel night? Take the overnight train.
Travelling as a family with luggage, and want flexibility? Drive, but break the journey in Jaipur.
Want to see Rajasthan properly? Make it a 4–7 day road trip.
A common, smart combination: drive one way and fly the other. Start in Delhi, road-trip through Jaipur, Pushkar or Jodhpur to Udaipur, then fly back. You see the state without doing the long drive twice.
Best Time to Travel from Delhi to Udaipur
- October to March: Ideal. Pleasant weather in both cities and along the highway.
- December and January: Watch for dense morning fog around Delhi and on the highway, which can delay flights, trains and road travel. Your driver may wait for visibility.
- April to June: Very hot. Fly, or drive very early in the morning.
- July to September: Monsoon. Udaipur is at its greenest. Roads are generally fine, but check for heavy rain alerts.

What to Pack for the Journey
For a road trip or an overnight train, keep a small day bag within reach:
- Water and snacks. Highway dhabas are frequent, but not always where you need them.
- Phone charger and power bank. Signal can drop on some stretches.
- Warm layer. Train AC coaches and winter mornings on the highway get cold.
- Scarf or stole. Useful for sun, dust and temple stops like Nathdwara and Ajmer.
- Cash. For tolls not covered by FASTag, temple donations and small shops.
- Motion-sickness tablets. The last stretch into Udaipur through the Aravallis has some curves.
On the train, a small padlock and chain for your luggage and slippers for the night are worth packing.
Travel Tips
- Leave Delhi early if you’re driving. Getting past Gurugram before 7 AM saves an hour.
- Book trains 60–90 days ahead for peak season.
- Don’t drive at night on the highway if you can avoid it. Heavy trucks and poor visibility make it tiring and less safe.
- Plan your Udaipur arrival for the afternoon, so you’re in time for sunset at Ambrai Ghat or a Lake Pichola boat ride.
- Keep a light bag in the car so you don’t unpack everything at an overnight stop.
